5pm (1994)
Live action video processed with a Hearn EAB Videolab and Fairlight CVI. Shot in 1994; completed in 1995.
The video was shot in Los Angeles, and the theme was “things you’d find in a city at 5pm.” There are rhythms to the editing and processing of the video that I intended to in some way reflect the rhythms of “a city” at that moment. I’d had the video planned for sometime, but we ended up shooting shortly after the Northridge earthquake. I didn’t want it to be about the earthquake, so we tried to frame shots to avoid the rubble that was at the time all over the place. Looking back at this video 15+ years later, I think the disquiet somehow still comes through, as people go about their lives in a partly-crumbled city.
