Flood report…

In early November, a water main break destroyed my studio. Among the lost equipment were all of my servers, which hosted most of my net projects: The Multi-Cultural Recycler, plagiarist.org, Cuejack, theBot, and several others. Some, like The Multi-Cultural Recycler, can not be restored, because they required specific software and hardware that’s no longer available. I am gradually restoring others, by moving them to temporary servers until I can replace the main server. Most things are documented here at amy-alexander.com, but many of the linked projects will be offline while the server is down…

Update: 12/20/15 – And we’re back! All the sites that can be restored have been fluffed up and moved to the cloud.

Site-specific “PIGS” performance this Saturday in San Diego!

Curt Miller and I will be performing on Saturday in San Diego. It’s an audiovisual improvisation: site-specific video, my custom PIGS software, silent percussion generating visuals.. and Curt’s amazing clarinet and computer music! I hope you’ll join us! 7pm in the Auditorium! Exclamation Points!

Photos! From PIGS / Rocket’s Red Glare at IDEAS / Qualcomm Institute

Some pix from The PIGS (Percussive Image Gestural System) debut this month as part of the IDEAS series at Qualcomm Institute. Curt Miller and I developed an improvisational audiovisual performance, “Rocket’s Red Glare,” based on the theme of “Things Exploding on YouTube.” I used PIGS to perform visuals, and Curt performed live clarinet, custom software, and vintage cassette tape recorder.

PIGS debut performance with Curt Miller in San Diego

IDEAS performance: Rocket’s Red Glare

First (beta!) performance introducing the work I’ve been developing for past couple years. As I’ve still got the training wheels on, the event will be part concert performance, part research/software demo.

PIGS (Percussive Image Gestural System) – is a software/hardware visual instrument and a research framework for some new approaches to improvisational cinematic performance. Rocket’s Red Glare is a concert performance I’ve been developing with clarinetist / sound artist Curt Miller. An experiment in audiovisual improvisation, Rocket’s Red Glare is the first piece to use PIGS.

While PIGS is still in an early state, and I feel like a kid at her first piano recital, hopefully it’ll be the beginning of things to come. And Curt’s music is really great – so hope you can make it!

Standup Comedy & Performance Art Miscellany

It’s nice to see the comedy / performance art relationship getting quite a bit of recognition lately. It made me think to add a new page to the site to bring together a few different humor-related character-based threads of my performance art work:  from standup comedy to digital audiovisual performance. The page is called Standup Comedy & Performance Art Miscellany. And now, Heeeere’s….  me.

Mary Hallock-Greenewalt Docs and Photos

Since 2009 I’ve been operating a Facebook page about early 20th century artist/inventor/suffrage activist Mary Hallock-Greenewalt. Born in Beirut, and mainly raised in Philadelphia, Hallock-Greenewalt is mainly known for her work designing and performing color organs — as well as her art of colored light performance, which she called Nourathar.

I recently visited the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, which houses a large collection of Hallock-Greenewalt’s documents and photos. I was able to photograph more than 200 items from the collection — but this only scratches the surface. The items document Hallock-Greenewalt’s work itself, her obsession with defending the primacy of her creations, as well as her dogged determination in transactions such as speccing a custom part from a vendor for her color organ.

I’ve begun posting the images on the Mary Hallock-Greenewalt Facebook page, and will upload the rest in the weeks to come. Stay tuned…
